1. Introduction.
I have decided to do a Sports Journalism website. My goal is to improve my Sports Journalism coverage skills and eventually consider it as a possible career. I will be covering local sports such as the Kamloops Blazers Hockey, as well as the four major sports leagues because there will be plenty of content to cover that way. The four major sports leagues include: The National Hockey League, The National Basketball League, The National Football League and The Major League Baseball. By covering local sports I will be able to get interviews and photos in person, as well helping the locals learn more about their favourite sports teams.
2. Rationale
I think there is a large audience for Sports Journalism. People all around the globe are very interested in sports and eat up all the media and drama that they can surrounding it. By covering local sports too I will be able to practice in an audience that I am familiar with. People will be interested in learning what is going on sports wise in their own city too, because sports are such a large part of our Kamloops culture!
3. Core angles and questions relevant to the topic
List of Questions and Stories Sports Journalism Could Explore:
- How does racism and a city’s support for sports relate?
- How does sport media affect our culture?
- How does Kamloops locals support compare to cities with Major Sports Teams?
- How does age affect the support percentage of sports?
- How did local Sports Stars get to where they are and how their stories relate or differ?
- How important are the sports teams to the people of Kamloops?
4. Media Outline
For my Media Outline examples I will use the question “How does Kamloops locals support compare to cities with Major Sports Teams?” as an example.
For Informative Text Stories with Photos I would include detailed writing about what I have researched and discovered, as well as photos that I have taken myself or been permitted to use by the original photographer. For this example, I could write about the percentage of people who support the Blazers in Kamloops compared to the percentage of people that support the Canucks in Vancouver. The pictures could include merchandise being worn in the crowds, stadium quality, and so on.
For Audio Interviews I would interview my friends on the Blazers asking questions about how the support feels, as well as personal questions that would interest the audience. I would also interview select locals that would give good insight into how they support the Blazers and ask them questions about how long they have supported them and such. I believe hearing someone’s voice is very powerful, as opposed to just reading a wall of text and photos.
For the Editorial Slideshow I could incorporate slideshows when showing pictures of fans, stadium, and logos etc. These could be two different slideshows on the website comparing the two different teams while incorporating powerful pictures for both of their cases!
For the Investigative Video I could create a video with peoples faces in it during interviews and use the emotion they express to help convey a story. I could also video things like the outside and inside building quality in a comparison to show support and funding for each respective building. Video could also be used to show fans excitement after a goal is scored, again in comparison.
Summary
I believe this topic would make for a very good opportunity to learn because I can apply it so easily to multimedia! Sports Journalism is a good career path and people love to listen to it. It is also something I am very interested in and would enjoy working on during this semester.
